Adult Open Division
Open division classes are geared towards students 16 through adult who wish to start dancing, return to a passion or looking for a new form of exercise. Classes include ballet, modern, pilates, jazz and much more.
Classes
intro Ballet [schedules]
This class is ideal for students with no dance background or limited experience. It is truly an introduction to classical ballet. The class follows the traditional structure but has much more emphasis on body posture and barre work than center work. The work is done primarily facing the barre. The student can expect to learn the basic stance, a few foot positions, basic port de bras, and the first form of many barre exercises. Our center work is composed of port de bras and simple adagio, preparation for turns, preparation for waltzes, fundamental petit allegro and reverance.
beginner Ballet [schedules]
This medium paced class picks right up from Intro Ballet (students should have a minimum of one year Intro Ballet) extending your vocabulary, learning to use your body as a facility, and expounding on combinations and placement. This class provides a full ballet class and full body workout, with room for questions and corrections. Need to brush up on skills learned one upon a time? Come take this class and get reacquainted with barre, beauty, and grace...Beginning Ballet!
intermediate Ballet [schedules]
For the intermediate student, this classical ballet class is geared for dancers with at least 3+ years of ballet experience. This is a structured ballet class that focuses on building classical technique through barre, center work, and across the floor combinations. This class works on building strength, increasing your flexibility and coordination, and improving musicality. A great way to have fun and build long, lean muscles!
advanced Ballet [schedules]
Moving on from the intermediate level, the advanced level continues to develop and maintain the student's overall understanding of classical ballet. In this class the student can expect quicker tempos, more complicated combinations, and more difficult choreography. One will learn a clear understanding of gravity, movement quality and musical phrasing as well as an extensive command of the entire body. Dancers should have at least 5+ years of classical ballet training before taking this class.
pointe [schedules]
An intermediate class in which the dancers will be asked to perform exercises on their toes with the assistance of special "pointe" shoes. Pointe dancing will help develop long, lean muscles, as well as a certain grace needed to flit across the stage, seemingly weightless. A minimum of 3 years ballet training is highly suggested for technically strong dancers.
Modern [schedules]
Modern dance is a relaxed, free style of dance in which choreographers use emotions and moods to design their own steps, in contrast to the structured code of steps in ballet. In this class the student will experience intense physical and mental challenges while building confidence and connections to not only those around them, but to themselves as well.
Hip Hop [schedules]
This class is designed for those who want to move. The class features a fun yet challenging stretch and warm-up, as well as exciting and unique choreography. Taught in an open and non-competitive atmosphere, you are sure to get a great workout while learning some fun moves.
"Straight" Jazz [schedules]
A high-energy level class, with classic jass technique styles ranging from musical, Broadway, Fosse, to pop diva-licious! It's fast-paced, with cardio, abs, technique, and fun all rolled into one! Open to ALL levels, this class will get you movin' and groovin' to the beat of your own fabulosity. Come on in and jump back into jazz!
salsa [schedules]
This hot Latin craze has now taken the Atlanta social scene by storm! Salsa is a fun, sexy dance style, usually done with a partner, that focuses on quick turns and dramatic tricks. Come learn everything from the basics to the most advanced combinations and patterns, then take your new moves out on the town with our regular monthly salsa outings. No partner required!
dance fitness [schedules]
The dance fitness class is based on the Horton Modern Dance technique to stretch, fortify and strengthen the body. The technique combines elements of Yoga and Pilates for a complete total body workout. It is geared toward the adult how is interested in dance as a form of exercise but does not include all the complications associated with it. It is fully adapbable to the non-dancer. If you are interested in a low-impact but highly effective total body workout then this is the class for you!
jazz fitness [schedules]
Jazz fitness is a fun class that focuses on basic jazz technique and stretching to improve flexibility. The warm-up will also infuse Pilates core strengthening techniques. Fun choreography will be taught in the last 15 minutes. This class is for everyone who wants to start the week out on an energetic note! Come join Radio City Rockette Margaret McPherson and experience an entertaining gym alternative!
tap [schedules]
Adult Tap students will focus on the fundamentals of tap technique while getting a great workout and having fun! The class will begin with a tap warm-up, progress to movements across the floor and finish each class with a combination. Elements of both cabaret and rhythm tap will be incorporated. All ability levels are welcome!
Flamenco [schedules]
Flamenco is an intense, passionate dance form with an emotional focus that feeds on improvisation. Flamenco dancing is characterized by colorful costumes, intense and exotic movements, stamping of the feet (zapateado), and clapping of the hands (palmada).
Pilates [schedules]
Pilates (pi-LAH-teez) is a form of body conditioning developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20th century. The method encompasses more than 500 exercises that simultaneously stretch and strengthen muscles. Pilates is based on the principle that before working the peripheral parts of the body, the core needs to be strong and stable. In fact, stabilization is the first of six Principles of Pilates that also include control, concentration, flow, breath and precision.
