Wabi Sabi Mission
Wabi Sabi will challenge new audiences, foster the next generation of choreographic talent, and push the boundaries of ballet through the creation of new works. By seeking a collaboration of art forms, Atlanta Ballet will further its commitment to educating audiences and inspiring the community.
Wabi Sabi is an unprecedented initiative that will serve as a platform for young choreographers to create and produce new work. The project will increase Atlanta Ballet’s presence in the community and bolster the in-town contemporary audience. This opportunity allows Atlanta Ballet to embark on presenting new work that enhances the scope of the existing repertory, while offering new artistic challenges to Company members.
Select choreographers, within and outside Atlanta Ballet, will work with Atlanta Ballet Company, Apprentice and Conservatory artists to prepare free, open to the public, world premiere concerts to be performed at Atlanta Ballet’s Michael C. Carlos Dance Centre and other venues throughout the city.
Service to the Community
Wabi Sabi will be an opportunity for the Company to create new contemporary works that speak to the vocabulary and themes of today, and it will also be an investment in Atlanta’s local dance community. Fostering in-house talent will add to the Company’s repertory as well as the dance community’s perception of Atlanta Ballet artists.
The Wabi Sabi performance series will also be the first of its kind to welcome the community into the process and the performances free of charge, contributing to Atlanta Ballet’s efforts to create an “Epicenter of Dance” at its new headquarter facility.
Part of Atlanta Ballet’s vision is to be recognized locally, regionally, and nationally as an organization committed to innovation and creativity. The Company’s mission is to build on the rich legacy of dance, and the organization’s core values include having vision for the future through integrity and inclusiveness.
Wabi Sabi is defined by the drivers of the organization and will bring additional acclaim to the already well-respected company. The new works will also contribute to the repositioning of the Atlanta Ballet brand as artistically adventuresome, esthetically physical, socially relevant and culturally reflective of this community’s unique identity.
It is Atlanta Ballet’s responsibility as a leading dance organization in the Southeast to challenge our dancers, preserve the history of the art form, and contribute to the current vocabulary. This distinctive project supports choreographers’ next steps toward important creative and artistic advancement. As we work to bring the power of the arts to all Atlantans, Atlanta Ballet remains committed to contributing programs that stir our imaginations, lift our hearts, and artistically reflect our current time and place.
