Learn about the music

The Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu created Sinfonietta La Jolla, the backdrop for Wheeldon’s Rush, after experiencing the pristine beauty of the ocean and sky in California in the later part of his life. Wheeldon found inspiration in the romantic score and its story, which led to a work that is original and postmodern in style, yet still maintaining the essence of traditional ballet that will please both classical and modern dance fans.

Learn about the choreographer

Dubbed the "golden boy" of ballet, Christopher Wheeldon is one of the most sought after choreographers of his generation (The Guardian). He trained with the Royal Ballet and New York City Ballet before pursuing a career as a choreographer. In addition to original works for major ballet companies around the world, Wheeldon's credits also include the choreography for the popular film Center Stage and the Metropolitan Opera's Carmen!
